What is a mini facelift?

Patients who come into our office for a mini-facelift are typically seeking a less-invasive option for improving their facial appearance. This procedure is ideal for both men and women who wish to address some of the initial signs of aging such as loose skin around the neck, an increased jowl, sagging jawline, and reduced elasticity of the skin but don't want to dramatically change the way they look. A mini facelift is also a useful option for patients who want to avoid an extensive surgical procedure and the lengthy recovery process that comes with it.

There is no average age at which to consider having a mini facelift. Dr. Ardesh has worked on patients in their early-mid 40's all the way to their late 60's. Sometimes a mini facelift can be performed years after a traditional facelift as a means for reinvigorating their look. But in order to have this type of work performed, patients must be in good health and maintain sufficient thickness and flexibility in the skin. Certain lifestyle choices may also help a patient become a stronger candidate for a mini facelift in Orange County.

How long does a facelift last?

The surgical procedures employed by Dr Ardesh are modern, state-of-the-art techniques designed to rejuvenate your appearance. An Orange County mini facelift is performed using small, carefully placed incisions behind the ears for faster recovery and results that can last for as long as a decade. Keep in mind, a mini facelift focuses solely on the lower portion of the face. Therefore, other areas that were not addressed during the procedure will continue along the present rate of aging with the impact that can bring to the skin of the face and neck.

By comparison, a full facelift targets both the lower and middle sections of the face along with the neck area, allowing for a more significant portion of skin to be tightened, excess skin and fat to be removed, and wrinkles to be eliminated. The results could last for as long as 20-25 years with proper skin care and lifestyle choices.

We must remind our patients that a facelift is not intended to stop the aging process entirely. No surgical procedure offers that capability. However, a facelift can turn back the clock on your skin and even slow the speed of the aging process. Once you have the procedure done, it's up to you to maintain the condition of the skin to help preserve the results for as long as possible. Here are some of the steps you can take to ensure that happens:

Post-Operative Care

Dr. Ardesh will give you a set of recommendations after the surgery is complete. These will include instructions for your recovery process and steps to take to care of your skin once your face has fully healed. Follow these instructions, as they are designed for improving and extending the results of the procedure for years to come.

Your Skin Care Routine

There are some very effective anti-aging skin care products on the market that you should consider to help maintain your new, revitalized appearance. These products are formulated to increase collagen production in the body to slow the aging process and keep your facelift looking fresh and healthy.

Lifestyle Changes

Patients who come to Dr. Ardesh for an Orange County mini facelift should be prepared to make some lifestyle changes that can work towards prolonging the results of the surgery and improve their overall well-being at the same time. Many of the lifestyle habits that we adopt can have an adverse effect on the health of our skin – drastically reducing or, better yet, eliminating these altogether can do wonders for extending the results of a facelift.

Two of the most damaging impacts on the skin are smoking and prolonged exposure to the sun. Both of these can age the skin prematurely and create wrinkles. Smoking, in particular, has been determined as a major cause of damage to the skin especially at the lower portion of the face.

Weight gain will also affect your facelift by causing the fat cells in the face to swell up. Healthy diet and exercise are not only good for you in general, but they can reduce the potential for changing the appearance of your face and altering the results of the facelift.

How to massage your face after a facelift?

With a procedure such as facelift, it's important that you take care to be gentle and cautious with your face after surgery. Massaging is very helpful for promoting the healing process, but it's also important that you know what you are doing and, better yet, know when you should or should not be massaging your face.

Dr. Ardesh will schedule a follow up appointment to review the healing process and how it is progressing. Massage is a useful technique to help you heal, but you should only do so after all of the incisions have fully closed and the bruising has faded. Massaging your face any sooner could lead to re-opening of the incisions, an increased risk of infection, and possible injury to the facelift.

But if the surgical area is suitable for the pressure and manipulation that comes with a facial massage, you can enjoy many benefits that will assist the healing process. A post-surgery massage can help to reduce pain and increase blood flow, bring down swelling, and make the skin more tender and soft which will also decrease the potential for scar tissue build-up.

If you are unsure whether or not your face is properly healed enough for a massage, you should check with Dr. Ardesh first. He can advise you on the right time to get a massage based on your progress. Not all of our patients heal at the same rate, so it could be a few days or a few weeks before your face is ready.

How long does it take to recover from a facelift?

We understand that our patients want to get back to a normal routine as soon as possible. But recovery times vary and it is critical that you allow your face to have enough healing time for the best results. Dr. Ardesh will apply dressings to the incisions, this will help to reduce swelling and bruising at the surgical site. You may still notice some of both right after surgery, this is normal and should begin to fade away after a day or two.

You may notice a feeling of tightness and slight discomfort. This is also normal and will go away shortly. Do not expect to resume a normal daily routine for at a week, perhaps longer based on how much work was done. Dr. Ardesh should be able to remove the dressings in a short period after surgery, at which point you will need to take some precautions with your skin. Stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen in that initial week or two after the dressings are removed.

If everything progresses as expected, you may be able to get back to typical everyday activities in two weeks.
