How to choose your facial plastic surgeon
Certifications
As a patient, you want a facial plastic surgeon who has achieved specialty certification in facial plastic and reconstructive procedures. While many medical professionals advertise themselves as “cosmetic surgeons,” only two plastic surgery boards are recognized by the American Medical Association: The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).
To attain board certification from the ABFPRS, the surgeon must first be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. Verify that your surgeon has completed a facial plastic fellowship and is board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This specialty certification requires many years of education and experience beyond the requirements to achieve a medical degree.
Hospital privileges
After reviewing a surgeon's board certification, find out which, if any, hospitals have granted admitting/operative privileges. Attaining hospital privileges requires a professional evaluation of the surgeon’s quality of work and consistent performance. If a surgeon does not have hospital privileges, it is a red flag.
Communication and comfort
You should feel that you have established a trusting relationship with your facial plastic surgeon. You want to know you are being heard, not brushed off, or spoken to in medical terms that you do not understand, and that the interchange of ideas has resulted in a full understanding of your personal goals for the surgery.
