Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Most clients pursuing rhinoplasty are happy with certain aspects of their appearance and unhappy with other aspects. A skilled plastic surgeon takes this into consideration and creates a procedure that both minimizes your cosmetic concerns and also celebrates your unique assets.

Ethnic rhinoplasty helps to preserve and honor your cultural and ethnic heritage while making subtle and nuanced changes to the nasal bridge, tip and nostrils. After ethnic rhinoplasty, your nose will be more balanced with the rest of your features, and the gaze will flow more naturally to the eyes and the smile.

What is ethnic rhinoplasty?

Ethnic rhinoplasty has the goal of improving the inner and outer structures of the nose while preserving the unique cultural identity of the patient, whether they be of African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Native American or Hispanic descent. Some individuals may require reduction to the nasal bridge, while others need reduction in the size of the nostrils. Each outcome is personalized and tailored to your individual aesthetic goals.

Double board certified physician Dr. Farhad Ardesh adheres to the highest standards for aesthetic excellence, coupling a compassionate approach with exquisite attention to detail. Dr. Ardesh’s ethnic rhinoplasty outcomes appear natural and unforced, letting your distinct beauty shine through.

Traditional rhinoplasty vs. ethnic rhinoplasty

Every ethnicity on this planet is a source of unique beauty. Traditional rhinoplasty involves making changes in the nose to restore function or reshape it to be more harmonious with the rest of the face. The nose is not considered a single feature; it is a critical part of the proportions and aesthetics of your face. Ethnic Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to enhance your entire look.

Ethnic rhinoplasty is also concerned with differences in skin and appearances that are unique to your background. Dr. Ardesh understands what works for each ethnic. If you have a nose that is too broad or flat and you hope to have it resculpted, the changes to your nose, and to what degree should significantly enhance your appearance.

Dr. Ardesh will provide computer simulations that give you objective guidance on choosing the best nose shape – not westernized, but a shape that brings out the beauty of background, while creating a more attractive balance and harmony.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY RECOVERY?

After surgery, you will arrive at our recovery unit and be fitted with dressings and bandages. Discomfort, nasal congestion and even nausea are all to be expected right after a major surgery. Our team will give you the proper pain medications to keep you as comfortable as possible. You may also receive antibiotics to make sure no infections arise.

Dr. Ardesh will provide you with a full aftercare protocol with instructions for eating, drinking, sleeping, showering and a timeline for returning to normal activities once you have healed. While you should rest in general, gentle walks at first will help keep the blood flowing.

Swelling and bruising can last up to several weeks after your surgery. After 2 weeks, you can begin wearing makeup to cover up any discoloration. It may take up to 6 months to see your full results, but the changes will be clear and visible after around 30 days.

How does ethnic rhinoplasty differ from conventional rhinoplasty?

In the past, surgeons employed a cookie-cutter approach to rhinoplasty, handling every client as though they were Caucasian, and ignoring the idiosyncrasies and nuances that are required to preserve each patient’s unique heritage.

Today, surgeons understand that every culture has its own standards of beauty, and that ethnicity will affect the bone structure and even the scar tissue of the patient. Ethnic rhinoplasty therefore requires immense artistry and skill, as well as respect for the differences that make us a colorful and diverse species.

Can I undergo other cosmetic procedures at the same time as rhinoplasty?

Often Dr. Ardesh will use injectables and dermal fillers in addition to surgical techniques. These treatments can help to make subtle changes to the rest of the features so that your rhinoplasty appears seamless and natural. Patients seeking more comprehensive changes can also undergo blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), lip augmentation, a brow lift or a neck lift to revitalize and renew their appearance on all fronts.

How long will my results last?

Results with ethnic rhinoplasty will last the rest of your life. As long as the nose is fully formed and developed at the time of surgery, you will enjoy your new appearance for decades to come.

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

Open rhinoplasty is an excellent choice when the changes required are dramatic and pronounced. By creating a tiny incision at the columella, the doctor is afforded the most control over reshaping the bridge, tip and nostrils. While there is a scar with open rhinoplasty, it is generally inconspicuous.

Closed rhinoplasty is performed without making any incisions. All work is done through the openings in the nostrils, avoiding postoperative scarring altogether. The only downside to closed rhinoplasty is that only more modest changes can be accomplished, but this may be ideal for certain patients who are only unhappy with only one aspect of their nose for instance.

Dr. Ardesh will perform an in-depth evaluation and medical review of each client, and will then make his best recommendation for which type of surgery will best serve your cosmetic goals.
